Note the wide-open doors in the side of the hangar deck. This allowed planes to warm up engines before taking the elevator to the flight deck, hence clearing the deck at once. This proved to be a serendipitous tactical advantage when faced with the expert Japanese pilots, whose operations were somewhat hobbled by having to warm up topside.
