Good inflight photo of an Heinkel He111H-2 of
Kampfgeschwader 1. , 7./KG 1. was under the command of Generalfeldmarschall nicked named(Smiling Albert) Kesselring. (Except KG 4) Other Kampfgeschwader's were KG 26, KG 27, KG 53 under Luftlotte 1.
Note that the large radio call letters have been painted out, and replaced with smaller call letters.

COLD WAR DEFECTION:

Dash for "Freedom" What's that old Romanian saying its "Go West, Young Man, Go West.

October 1946 an He111H after being serviced & repaired, was to fly back to its base However, both pilot and mechanic planed a daring escape they later picked up anti-communist passengers and made their escaped.
Romanian fighters, intercepted but lost them in heavy clouds, crew landed in Bari, Italy.

March 1952 an He111H-6 flown by Romanian Air Force Captain Piturca, a WWII veteran flew to Yugoslavia. Captain Piturca made it to Frankfurt W. Germany, and received a US visa in 1955.

The other crewmen remained in a free world country. Later
another He111H crew flew to Greece. After WWII there were tens of thousands who made the dash for Freedom
leaving their homelands forever to seek a better life in the west...

I thank the editor/ww2db for allowing me to leave these little known fact about WWII & the Cold War...

B-24D Liberator “Lady Be Good” in the Libyan desert over 15 years after it disappeared on its way back from a 1943 bombing raid to Naples. The wreck was not discovered until 16 May 1959.
