Do-17E the "Flying Pencil" created as a fast
mail plane, when in reality a fast bomber.
The Do-17 has been overshadowed by the He-111
and the Ju-88, later model Do-17s served as
night-fighters and the roll as bomber.
FOREIGN DORNIERS:
Yugoslavia ordered the Do-17 and rights to licence-production. They would be powered by
French Gnome-Rhone radial engines, and equipped with Belgian machine guns, Hispano 20mm cannon and Czechoslovak cameras for reconnassiance work.
The modifications led to a more capable a/c than early Do-17s used by the Luftwaffe.
When Germany attacked Yugoslavia in 1941 many of the Sixty bombers in service were destroyed on the ground some a/c carried out
bombing attacks against German positions before being lost in combat.
Two a/c escaped to Egypt carrying King Peter
and members of his Government, Seven flew gold to Greece, the Germans captured Eighteen
Do-17s and the Italians captured Two, Eleven were supplied to Bulgaria in 1940, and Eleven ex-Yugoslavia Do-17s in 1941, Eleven to Croatia, Romania Ten, Hungary One Do-17, Switzerland operated One Do-17 interned 1940
The USAAF operated One Do-17 and named her
"Axis Sally" tested after the war.
POST-WAR SURVIVORS:
Bulgaria returned Four to Yugoslavia after WWII, they served into the 1950s until replaced with Russian and Western aircraft.
Finland retired its Do-17s in 1954,
