Famous WW2 Quote
"The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years."James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, 23 Feb 1945

The nest of destroyers was set up starting at the Dobbin AD-3. Tied alongside was the destroyers of DesRon1/Div1 Squadron Flag was the Phelps DD-360. Along side the Dobbin was the Dewey DD-349, Hull DD-350, Worden DD-352, MacDonough DD-351 and the Phelps DD-360. The MacDonough fired on, rammed and depth charged one of the minisubs that was inside the harbor. The Dewey was undergoing tender overhaul and did not get out of the Harbor until 1500 and was following the Nevada BB-36 when she had to ground on Hospital Point. After the Dewey went around the Nevada and reached the Harbor mouth a spread of three torpedos striked under her. They were set to a depth that would have holed the Nevada is she had continued into that bottle neck. My father served in the Dewey from Pearl until just before Iwo Jima.
Have some shots of the Dewey and other tin cans in her Squadron and the DANFS report on the Dewey if you are interested contact me at desertfox1a@q.com.
