Famous WW2 Quote
"The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years."James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, 23 Feb 1945

POSE FOR THE CAMERA:
Looks like the GI, is still wearing his M1917
steel helmet, as you can see the helmet didn't provide much protection to the side or back of the head.
It would later be replaced by the new MI steel helmet. He's wearing early forest green
cotton uniform, with gas mask and armed with the MIA1 .45ACP Thompson Submachine gun with a 20 round stick magazine, this was a more simple and improved version of the M1928A1,
the M1 was adopted by the US Army in Apr 1942
during WWII, 1,500,000 were produced and by 1945 the M1 cost the US Government $45.00 to make.
OLDIES BUT GOODIES:
When I went to Fort Sill, Ok. for advanced training in 1966 the US Army was still using the M1A1 for training, along with the M1919
.30 caliber machine gun and the 3.5in M20 Bazooka.
