My fathers best friend was with the 26th ID and was in the battle for Aachen. Oh the stories he could tell.

The M1919 fired the .30-06 round same used
in the Garand M1. The M1919A4 fed ammunition from a 250 round fabric cloth belt, left to right, it looks like the above photograph is backward.
Later the cloth belt was replaced with a disintegrating metal link belt. The weapon was crew served meaning you had the gunner, assistant gunner, who helped feed the weapon plus two ammunition carriers.

If this is members of the 26th Regt, 1st Inf Division, My Uncle Arvil Smith was with Co F, 2d BN. I believe at the time of Aachen, he was still recovering from earlier wounds.

LET ME TELL YA, THAT .30 CAN EAT THE LEAD, AND LOOK AT ALL THAT BRASS!...
IT TOOK THE PEOPLE OF EUROPE OVER FIFTY YEARS TO CLEAN UP THAT WWII MESS. EVEN TODAY BOMBS AND MINES ARE STILL BEING CLEARED.
IN 1967 WHEN I WENT TO LONDON, ENGLAND YOU COULD STILL BLOCKS OF BOMBED OUT BUILDINGS.
