Repair ship USS Jason is alongside. This damage was the result of a well organized attack known as Operation Tan No. 2 that launched 24 P1Y Ginga bombers from Kanoya on Kyushu on a long range, one way special attack mission against the US Navy anchorage at Ulithi. For a variety of reasons, only 2 airplanes arrived at Ulithi with one striking the Randolph at 2007 hours local time and the other crashing into a road next to a signal tower on the small island of Sorlen that may have looked like a flight deck in the dark. The Randolph was struck in the stern just below the level of the flight deck near where nearly 200 men were watching a movie on the Hangar Deck. 27 men were killed and 105 were wounded. Randolph was repaired at Ulithi without having to return to the United States and rejoined the fleet in Apr 1945
