Actually, this photo shows a 498th Bomb Squadron - 345th Bomb Group ("Air Apaches") Mitchell attacking IJA defensive anti-aircraft gun positions in the vicinity of the large Japanese Army-occupied Wewak/Boram airfield complex. The 43rd Bomb Group ("Ken's Men") operated heavy bombers in the same theater of operations, first with B-17's and then transitioning to B-24's. Both of the groups mentioned were assigned to the 5th USAAF.

Special thanks to Jack Fellows for pointing out the glaring errors in the original caption for this photo. The caption has since been corrected. This photo exists on other websites reversed left to right (including here initially), but it is shown aligned this way in the very authoritative Warpath Across the Pacific by L.J. Hickey and in this alignment the background ridge line matches other photos from this raid. The arcing lines across this photo are scratches or cuts in the negative.

Did General Jarrad V. Crabb present his men with special holsters for their 1911 handguns? Thank you.
