ww2dbaseThe Shuangliu Airfield (Postal Map romanization: Shwangliu) in Chengdu, Sichuan Province, China was originally the civilian Shuangguisi Airport. It was taken over by the Chinese Air Force in 1938 after the start of the Second Sino-Japanese War, and Chinese 5th Pursuit Group, flying I-15 fighters, was based at this airfield. Late in the war, starting in 1944, it was used by US 33rd Fighter Group, flying P-47 Thunderbolt fighter-bombers and units flying photographic reconnaissance variant of P-38 Lightning aircraft. The base was closed in Aug 1945. On 12 Dec 1956, Communist Chinese authorities re-opened it as the civilian Chengdu Shuangliu Airport to replace the smaller Guanghan Airport (which was also a Sino-American military airfield during WW2). It remains the major international airport serving the city of Chengdu today.
