ww2dbaseOranienburg Concentration Camp, located north of Berlin, Germany, was established at a non-functioning factory in Mar 1933. It was the first concentration camp established by the German Nazi regime. Its first inmates were generally political opponents (largely communists and social democrats), but a number of homosexuals and other "undesirables" were also imprisoned at Oranienburg. The prisoners were often employed as forced laborers for the town of Oranienburg. While it was initially a SA (Sturmabteilung) facility, it was taken over by the SS (Schutzstaffel) on 4 Jul 1934 after the bloody struggle between the SA and the SS which ended in SS victory. In 1936, Oranienburg Concentration Camp closed as the nearby and larger Sachsenhausen Concentration Camp began operations. At the time of its closing, the prison camp had a population of over 3,000. 16 prisoners died at Oranienburg Concentration Camp.
