Germany Japan Pacific Ocean
  • USS Ray's conning tower suffered flooding while she dove to escape an approaching Japanese patrol aircraft in the South China Sea; she would sail to Mios Woendi near Biak, Dutch East Indies for repairs. ww2dbase [Ray | South China Sea | CPC]
  • USS Alabama shot down three attacking Japanese aircraft while operating south of Taiwan. ww2dbase [Alabama | CPC]

Taiwan
  • USS Cassin Young shot down several Japanese aircraft off Taiwan, suffered five men wounded by machine gun fire. ww2dbase [Cassin Young | CPC]
  • Carrier aircraft from USS Intrepid attacked Shinchiku (now Hsinchu), Taiwan. At Shinchiku Airfield, one Ki-44 aircraft on the ground, five twin-engine aircraft on the ground, and 1 hangar building were destroyed. At the natural gas experimentation station about four miles east of the airfield, three hits were scored, with one hitting the lab building, another destroying the warehouse, and the last damaging the methane plant; 34 workers were killed at the station. ww2dbase [Intrepid | Shinchiku Airfield | Shinchiku | CPC]
  • 132 B-29 bombers of USAAF 40th, 444th, 462th, and 486th Bombardment Groups launched from the Chengdu, China area airfields to attack the Okayama Aircraft Factory north of Takao (now Kaohsiung), Taiwan. 106 of them dropped their bomb loads on the primary targets, while 12 bombed secondary targets. 2 bombers were lost on this mission. ww2dbase [Okayama Aircraft Factory | Takao | CPC]
United Kingdom
  • In Britain, a V-1 flying bomb landed in a field by the Suffolk village of Hopton and failed to explode. Bomb Disposal Officer Lieutenant C. H. Bassett was killed whilst removing one of the fuses.
