  • Chinese communists issued an internal order to develop the defenses of northeastern China against possible advances from the south by Nationalist troops. ww2dbase [CPC]
Dutch East Indies
  • Radical Indonesian nationalists, unhappy with the slow progress of the newly founded republic and with the continuing presence of Japanese peacekeepers in Jakarta, organized a large demonstration in the city. Just as tension was about to reach the level of violence, President Sukarno, speaking to the crowd, was able to calm the mood and disperse the crowd. ww2dbase [Jakarta, Java | CPC]
  • A group of recently freed Dutch internees raised a Dutch flag over the Hotel Oranje (now Hotel Majapahit) in Surabaya, Indonesia. The hotel building was the headquarters of the Recovery of Allied Pirsoner of War and Internees organization as well as the headquarters of the Japanese troops charged with keeping order in the city. This flag raising triggered violence from local nationalists, resulting in the death of the leader of the Dutch group. French Indochina
  • British Major General Douglas Gracey declared martial law in Saigon, Cochinchina, French Indochina as means to strike at the influence of the Viet Minh. Various pro-independence groups began organizing a general strike to protest against the British occupation administration. ww2dbase [Cochinchina | CPC]
India
  • The Congress Party of India began negotiating with Britain regarding independence. ww2dbase [CPC]
Korea
  • Kim Il-Sung, Communist guerrilla fighter in China and then becoming an officer of the Red Army, arrived in Wonsan, Korea. ww2dbase [Wonsan, Kangwon | CPC]
United Kingdom
  • Lord Haw-Haw, William Joyce, was sentenced to death in Britain for treason. ww2dbase [William Joyce | England | TH]
United States
  • USS Pompon arrived at New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. ww2dbase [Pompon | New Orleans, Louisiana | CPC]
  • USS Honolulu got underway from the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia for one brief trial that took her to Cape Henry at the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, before returning to the Navy Yard repair piers. ww2dbase [Honolulu | Portsmouth, Virginia | DS]
