- Joseph Goebbels visited Adolf Hitler at Rastenburg, East Prussia, Germany, noting that he and Adolf Hitler had a conversation about the possibility of negotiating peace with either the Western Allies or with the Soviet Union in order to focus on the other. - Elisabeth von Thadden hosted a birthday tea party in Heidelberg, Germany for members of the anti-Hitler Solf Circle. Unbeknownst to the party attenders, one of the guests, Paul Reckzeh, was a spy for the Gestapo. - By dawn, British 4th Parachute Brigade had reached Massafra, Italy 20 kilometers northwest of Taranto. Just outside of Taranto harbor, HMS Abdiel struck a mine and sank; 168 were killed. - Escort carrier USS Card and her task group arrived at Norfolk, Virginia at the conclusion of their Atlantic anti-submarine voyage. Composite Squadron VC-1 disembarked Card and transferred to Norfolk Naval Air Station.
