  • The Japanese Navy 2nd Air Fleet was attached to the Combined Fleet, and its strength group to include two air flotillas and six air groups.   • The Japanese Navy established the 1st Special Submarine Training Base Group at Otsujima in Tokuyama Bay, 80 kilometers southwest of Hiroshima, Japan, under the command of Rear Admiral Mitsuri Nagai. Mariana Islands Pacific Ocean Trinidad
  • The crew of USS Ticonderoga had a day of rest off the ship in Scotland Bay, Trinidad. ww2dbase [Ticonderoga | Scotland Bay | DS]
United Kingdom
  • 30 sorties were made by the Heinkel bombers of III/KG3 carrying V-1 flying bombs against Britain. A British naval anti-aircraft battery brought down one of the aircraft. The falling V-1 bombs caused deaths in the southern London boroughs of Battersea and Clapham where six people were killed in the Underground Station. The Royal navy Fleet Air Arm Pilot Sub Lieutenant D. P. Davies, whilst returning from an anti-shipping patrol in his Avenger Mk. 1 aircraft, saw a V-1 bomb and his TAG L/Airman Fred Shirmer brought it down at 700 yards, only firing 20 rounds; Shirmer received a mention in dispatches. ww2dbase [V-Weapons Campaign | Vergeltungswaffe 1 | London, England | HM]
United States
  • John Basilone married Sergeant Lena Mae Riggi at St. Mary's Star of the Sea Church in Oceanside, California, United States. ww2dbase [John Basilone | Oceanside, California | CPC]
  • Anti-submarine Hunter-Killer Task Group 22.10 (TG 22.10) centered around escort carrier USS Card, still with the TBM-1C Avengers and FM-2 Wildcats of Composite Squadron VC-12 embarked, departed Boston bound for the Caribbean.
