- 30 US warships disembarked 12,000 troops and 2,000 officers of Chinese 70th Army at Kirun (Keelung), Taiwan amidst a cheering crowd. The Taiwanese civilians were surprised to see the poor condition of the Chinese soldiers, wearing patchworked uniforms and straw sandals. The Chinese Army had indeed purposely dispatched its poorest equipped and poorest trained unit to liberate this remote province, while the best units were busy being ordered to advance to northern China to counter the communist threat. The Chinese troops rested only slightly before being ordered to advance on the capital of Taihoku (Taipei). ww2dbase [Kirun, Taihoku | CPC]
