- American soldier William Nakamura volunteered to stay behind to cover his platoon's retreat near Castellina Marittima, Italy. Discovering that a German machine gun position was threatening the withdraw, he crawled toward it and fired on the Germans to temporarily silence the machine gun. - In Toscana, Italy, Private First Class Frank Ono destroyed a German machine gun position single-handedly, administered first aid to two fellow US soldiers, and volunteered to cover the rear of his platoon as the unit was withdrawing. - Private 1st Class Kaoru Moto of US 100th Infantry Battalion came upon a German machine gun nest near Castellina Marittima, Italy and silenced it by killing the machine gunner and forcing the assistant gunner to surrender. He then forced a second machine gun nest to withdraw, but sustained rifle wound during the process. Despite the wound, when he came upon a third machine gun position, he attacked and forced the three German crew members to surrender.
