American soldier William Nakamura volunteered to stay behind to cover his platoon's retreat near Castellina Marittima, Italy. Discovering that a German machine gun position was threatening the withdraw, he crawled toward it and fired on the Germans to temporarily silence the machine gun. In Toscana, Italy, Private First Class Frank Ono destroyed a German machine gun position single-handedly, administered first aid to two fellow US soldiers, and volunteered to cover the rear of his platoon as the unit was withdrawing. Private 1st Class Kaoru Moto of US 100th Infantry Battalion came upon a German machine gun nest near Castellina Marittima, Italy and silenced it by killing the machine gunner and forcing the assistant gunner to surrender. He then forced a second machine gun nest to withdraw, but sustained rifle wound during the process. Despite the wound, when he came upon a third machine gun position, he attacked and forced the three German crew members to surrender.
