- Royal Navy Submarine HMS Parthian (Commander M. G. Rimington, DSO, RN) acted as a beacon to guide the ships in that participated in Operation Abstention, which aimed to take control of the Italian-held Greek island of Kastelorizo off the Turkish coast. A raiding party of 200 commandos was landed by destroyers HMS Decoy (H 73; Commander E. G. McGregor, DSO, RN) and HMS Hereward (H 93; Commander C. W. Greening, RN). The gunboat HMS Ladybird (Lieutenant Commander (retired) J.F. Blackburn, RN) landed Royal Marines. However, the operation was a failure as Italian forces led by Admiral Luigi Biancheri reacted with vigour and retook the island. ww2dbase [Kastelorizo, Rhodes | HM]

"With Germany arming at breakneck speed, England lost in a pacifist dream, France corrupt and torn by dissension, America remote and indifferent... do you not tremble for your children?"Winston Churchill, 1935
