This photograph should be published once a year on the front page of every newspaper in the world. It is the finest example I know of that shows the end result of appeasement. Our current batch of world leaders (joke?) are lining us up for such acts to be repeated, only this time on a much grander, nuclear scale.

What happens when your government has too much control

Here it is -- how do individual men and women accept and carry out the hateful and murderous demands of one human being against another? The requirement of personal responsibility, integrity, and honour must never become an antiquated philosophy -- but remain the steadfast pillar and core of what it means to be a Free Man and a Free WoMan. It is the responsibility of every living Person on this planet to secure and maintain Freedom for himself, his neighbor, and his descendants.

the interpretation of this photo makes no sense. the soldier is pointing his rifle in such a way that he would hit the group of crouching men on the right, or at least shoot just above them. It also appears that he may be pointing a little to the left of the woman and child. Nobody knows what's going on there, but it sure does not look like an execution.

May God save us all from times like these.

You can see guns to the left (with their slings) and a body as well. I wonder what this brave German soldier thought as he sighted his rifle on this innocent woman holding her child? How could this woman be the cause of all Germany's ills? The German (and Polish) people were more than happy to kill off their Jewish neighbors and steal their businesses, homes, and property. WWII was the biggest organized theft of private property in the history of the world. Why else would Polish peasants kill hundreds of returning Jews after their liberation from the death camps? Because they had already moved into their houses and stolen their property and had no intention of returning it. Sickening but true. (I wonder if the bastard soldier is still alive?)

Peter, your Timeline of the Holocaust was amazing. Thank you for laying it out so clearly.

Not coercively a German soldier. Many of the axes forces or allies and Waffen-SS-volunteer forces wore German cut uniforms... like Lithuanians, Russinas, Ukrainians....

Rob:

You offer an interesting idea, that this is a Soviet propaganda photo. I notice you offer pitifully little support for your idea and I wonder what your authorities are. Whether this is a propaganda photo or a genuine event, things like the scene depicted here really did happen so the point of the photo and the emotions evoked by it 70 years later remain completely valid either way.

PS: My Debate teacher used to say that the person who first resorts to coarse language and name calling is effectively admitting surrender and that their position lacks any further merit.

Just wasn't Germans in those Nazi uniforms. Look at the former Yugoslavia. The Albanians, Bosnian Muslims and CROATIANS all wore those uniforms while killing Serbs and Jews. Truth hurts
