During the attack on Pearl Harbor Dec 7,1941
the USS Arizona was destroyed and sunk, with the loss of 1,102 sailors and marines.
2,400 Military personnel were killed in the
attack.
After World War II, In 1949 the Pacific War Memorial Commission was created to build a Memorial in Hawaii.
A flag pole was attached to the Arizona in 1950 and a tradition of hoisting & lowering
the flag started.
In 1962 the dedication of the USS Arizona was
opened. Over One million persons visit the
Arizona each year.
The remains of the ship have been declared a National Historic Landmark, on May 5, 1989.
FORGET THEM NOT
Contrary to popular belief, the Arizona is no longer in commission with the US Navy she is However, a US Military Cemetary the United States flag flies from her flagpole twenty four hours a day.
The Arizona Memorial has come to commemorate all military personnel killed on Dec. 7,1941
The National Parks Service monitors the
condition of the ship. 2016 will be the 100th
anniversary when she was built in 1916.
The USS Arizona became a symbol of a sneak attack, being unprepared, caught with one's
pants down.
The Arizona stands for that. A Nation must
always have vigilance in a uncertain world,
never ever, underestimate your enemy yesterday, today and tomorrow.
MANNING THE RAILS:
Every United States Naval Ship, Coast Guard
& Merchant Marine Ship entering Pearl Harbor
takes part in the Manning of the Rails.
Ships personnel stand at attention and salute
the USS Arizona, as each ship passes by.
Foreign Naval Ships have also taken part in the Manning of the Rails.
