Famous WW2 Quote
"Among the men who fought on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue."Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, 16 Mar 1945

Captain Thomas Lanphier can be seen over Twinning’s right shoulder. The men are standing in front of Barber’s regular P-38G Lightning “Daisy 2” that did not fly during the attack. The markings on the aircraft’s nose have an interesting story behind them. There are three Japanese ensigns representing three aerial victories plus a white rectangle with the silhouette of a Japanese subchaser. On 29 Mar 1943 during a mission to strafe the Shortlands seaplane base, Barber strafed a Japanese subchaser and got so close that his port wing clipped the ship’s radio mast. The wing was damaged but Barber was able to return to base. For this mission, Barber was awarded his 2nd Silver Star.
