The pilot sat under a fully glazed Plexiglas cockpit canopy, and was protected by a 15mm armor plate behind his seat. If the pilot had to exit the aircraft in flight, it was found out to be very difficult, plans were made to install an ejection seat, but these were never carried out. To view aft of the Ar 234 he had a periscope and defensive armament was 1 x 13mm machine gun that was located in the tail and fired by remote control.
Early models of the Ar 234 used a dolly mounted under the fuselage for takeoff and was jettisoned afterwards.
Two Walther rocket-assisted take-off units, one under each wing giving 30 seconds of added thrust in the take-off run. Landing the Ar 234 used a
braking parachute, early models used a landing skid and later replaced with tricycle landing gear. For reconnaissance missions, the Ar 234 was fitted with two Rb 50/30s cameras in the rear fuselage.
