This hull was laid down for the Maritime Commission as a Type C3-S-A1 merchant vessel, hull #170, and was to be named SS Steel Advocate. This hull, along with the seven others under construction at the time, were acquired by the US Navy 1 May 1942 for conversion into escort carriers. Even though the actual acquisition by the Navy did not take place until 6 weeks after the launching seen here, this procurement was obviously well known at the time since other photos from this date show this hull with a ship’s name painted over and with “BOGUE” painted over that (barely seen here).
