Some sources display this image reversed left-to-right but this is incorrect as that puts Captain Mentz’ ribbons on the wrong side of his jacket.

Captain Mentz sustained his injuries 30 Dec 1944 as captain of the torpedo boat tender USS Orestes. The ship was struck broadside by an Aichi D3A “Val” dive bomber and the blast knocked Captain Mentz against a bulkhead breaking both his arms and cast him overboard.

Captain Inglis sustained his injuries 24 Oct 1944 during the Battle of Leyte Gulf as commander of the cruiser USS Birmingham as she was damaged by explosions aboard the stricken USS Princeton when Birmingham was close aboard assisting with firefighting.
