Guadalcanal only towed U-505 for three days before transferring her to a fleet tug. This photo should be dated June 7, not June 17.

It is actually worse than you describe. Ocean-going tug USS Abnaki took U-505 under tow at 0910 hours on 7 Jun 1944 (local time). Shadows indicate this photo was not taken earlier than 9:00 AM so it must have been taken before 7 Jun 1944. Based on all of this, the caption has been changed as to the date. Thank you bringing this up and forcing a closer look at this question.
