Famous WW2 Quote
"All right, they're on our left, they're on our right, they're in front of us, they're behind us... they can't get away this time."Lt. Gen. Lewis B. "Chesty" Puller, at Guadalcanal

In the spring of 1943 the B-17s of the 414th Bomb Squadron, 97th Bomb Group, 15th Air Force, had played a major role in the month long intensive bombing of Axis bases in Italy, Sardinia and Sicily, prior to the Allied invasion of Sicily. The squadron participated in the bombIng of Messina on 8 May, and on 25 June 1943 some 130 Northwest African Air Force B-17s dropped a further 300 ton of bombs on the port causing extensive damage to Italian Navy facilities there.
