Famous WW2 Quote
"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terrors. Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival."Winston Churchill

The Navy caption for this photo says it was taken on 18 May 1943 but this is incorrect. On 18 May 1943 Iowa was anchored in Chesapeake Bay and Lexington was in Trinidad. May 18th is more likely the date the photo arrived in the Navy files (this is not uncommon for US Navy photo dates). The presence of the Chamberlin-Vanderbilt Hotel in the photo’s background (Old Point Comfort, north side of the channel) means this photo shows both ships entering Hampton Roads at Norfolk, Virginia. The only time both ships were together entering Hampton Roads during this period was mid-day on 15 Apr 1943.
