I've admired this photo for 50 years. It's in my father's copy of the 6th Marine Division's History book. Dad is 93 years old now and I was just looking through the book with him the other night.
His name is Vernon Hoying, 6th Marine Division, 22nd Marines, Company C.

My dad was at that airfield with his fighter squadron VMF-312 when that pic was made. My dad was SSgt Wm.Odum, ground crew. Semper Fi

As I recall. there was a *** giretsu or suicide attack at Yontan where a *** Betty bomber crashlanded on the runway and troops armed with handgrenades and explosives rushed out of the plane and started destroying Marine fighter planes. That tracer in picture may have been that occasion

Oh, Lord-made a mistake re vmf-312-they were based at the newly retaken Kadena Field- not Yontan as they were with MAG 33. The reason Yontan sticks inmy mindisthat suicide attack my dad told me about many times.
