In response to Anonymous #1 above: While a little more supportable information as to why March 1945 is wrong would have made this question easier to resolve, the matter is resolved conclusively in the USS Makin Island’s War Diary for the Nansei Shoto Operation. The Navy has long dated this photo as 27 Mar 1945 but the ship’s War Diary is very specific about being the first US Escort Carrier to enter Kerama Retto on 31 Mar 1945, dropping anchor at 0828 hours and weighing anchor at 1835 hours that same day. The caption date has been adjusted accordingly.
