My father, who passed away a few years ago, was in this unit from Hawaii to Saipan to Leyte to Okinawa. He was assigned to the fire direction center. I have some info on the unit and his journal. I have a very few photos. My father painted the nose art on one of their spotter planes -- "Droopy Peter".

My father, who passed away a few years ago, was in this unit from Hawaii to Saipan to Leyte to Okinawa. He was assigned to the fire direction center. I have some info on the unit and his journal. I have a very few photos. My father painted the nose art on one of their spotter planes -- "Droopy Peter".

My father Albert Windon was in the 532 Field Artillery Battalion on Okinawa. I know nothing of the units history, and he died years ago. Any sources of information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Blane

The 420th Field Artillery Group of the XXIV Corps Artillery included the 531st and 532d FA Battalions. Each battalion had three four-gun batteries of 155mm MI Guns ("Long Toms"). They left Oahu on or about May 29, 1944 bound for Saipan. After the Battle of Saipan they headed to Leyte in the Philippines. On Mar 31,1945, they landed on the two small islands of Kamiyama Shima in the Keise Shima island group -- as shown in photo above. A few weeks later they moved onto the main island of Okinawa. I'm looking for more detail on the 532d, particularly on Leyte and the Battle of Okinawa. My dad was in the 531st.
