There were two carriers used to on Lake Michigan for carrier qualifications, USS Sable and USS Wolverine. Each one was created separately from Great Lakes side-wheel steamships and each one was unique unto itself. As such neither one belonged to a "class" in the same sense as most other Navy ships. Technically, the Navy did not even classify them as aircraft carriers-they were classified as Miscellaneous Unclassified ships with the 'IX' designation and within that heading they were called Training Aircraft Carriers.
