Actually, I believe they are in the process of a personnel transfer rather than refueling.

Lee is correct. VF-85 and VBF-85 transferred over on this date. And men from 'Carrier Air Group Two' came aboard. This is from the Shang's war diary dated Sept 3 1945

Only six-and-a-half hours was needed to transfer all men and all equipment both ways using two provision whips (high wires) when it had been estimated the transfer would take three days by more conventional methods. I was very interested to learn about this and the caption has been corrected. Thanks to you both for bringing this to our attention.

You are both correct. The Attu War Diary gives an even more detailed account. No fuel was transferred, only people and stuff. Only six-and-a-half hours was needed to transfer all men and all equipment both ways using two provision whips (high wires) when it had been estimated the transfer would take three days by more conventional methods. Thanks David. My Uncle (VBF85 pilot) is most likely on the fantail. He was the last POW taken in the war. His fellow pilots 'liberated' him from Ofuna. You can see him in the MovieTone film leaving the camp.
