  • British freighter Chulmleigh of Operation FB, stuck on a reef off Norway, was abandoned by her crew at 0400 hours; at 1558 hours, German submarine U-625 found Chulmleigh and destroyed her with gunfire. At 2224 hours, U-625 found British freighter Empire Sky, also of Operation FB, and sank her south of Spitzbergen, Norway at 2224 hours, killing all 60 aboard. ww2dbase [Arctic Convoys | CPC]
  • USS Gunnel conducted reconnaissance in Fedhala Roads off French North Africa. ww2dbase [Gunnel | CPC]
  • "Ring out the bells", General Harold Alexander signalled Prime Minister Winston Churchill, "Prisoners estimated now 20,000, tanks 350, guns 400, MT several thousand. Our mobile forces are south of Mersa Matruh. Eighth Army is advancing." Australian New Guinea
  • About 600 British prisoners of war arrived at Kokopo, New Britain as slave laborers. Most of them would soon be sent to Ballale island in the Solomon Islands to build an airfield. ww2dbase [Kokopo, New Britain | CPC]
British Western Pacific Territories Gibraltar
  • Lieutenant General Dwight Eisenhower flew from London, England, United Kingdom to his headquarters in Gibraltar from where he would direct Operation Torch. ww2dbase [Dwight Eisenhower | AC]
Japan Korea
  • USS Haddock fired 3 torpedoes at Japanese Army troop transport French Maru northeast of Jeju island, Korea; all torpedoes missed. She was given chase by destroyers and aircraft. ww2dbase [Haddock | CPC]
New Hebrides Pacific Ocean
  • While escorting a convoy from the United States to New Caledonia, USS Honolulu encountered a merchant vessel that refused to answer challenges for 10 minutes. Honolulu fired one shot across the ship's bow and got an immediate and correct response identifying the ship as the SS Sea Witch bound for San Pedro, California. ww2dbase [Honolulu | DS]

  • The Davao Penal Colony on Mindanao, Philippine Islands took in its second group of American and Filipino prisoners, numbered at about 1,000. ww2dbase [Davao | CPC]
