  • The two companies that the US 7th Armoured Division had managed to get across the Moselle River in France abandoned their positions after a fierce counterattack by German SS troops which began on the previous date. The loss was not too serious as a better crossing had been established further south at Arnaville, but even there bridging operations were still hampered by artillery fire from Fort Driant. ww2dbase [Lorraine | AC]
Germany
  • Carl Spaatz ordered large raids on German synthetic oil plants, dispatching 1,136 aircraft; the German Luftwaffe lost heavily in air battles. ww2dbase [Bombing of Hamburg, Dresden, and Other Cities | AC]
  • 36 B-17 bombers of 100th Bomber Group of US 8th Air Force, en route to attack the Schwarzheide synthetic fuel factory in eastern Germany, were intercepted by 60 Fw 190A and Bf 109 fighters of German Jagdgeschwader 4. In the first attack wave, 14 US bombers were shot down uncontested by American fighter escort, which had not yet arrived. In the second attack wave, US fighters were able to shoot down 32 German fighters (29 pilots killed). The air battle took place roughly over the village of Oberwiesenthal in southern Germany.   • The USAAF 306th Bomb Group flying from RAF Thurleigh launched a bombing raid against the synthetic oil facilities at Merseburg, Germany but had to divert due to weather. Hawaii Japan Pacific Ocean
  • While conducting flight training in Hawaiian waters south of Oahu, an F6F Hellcat landed aboard USS Ranger but the pilot mistook a taxi signal for a take-off signal and powered forward into parked aircraft.   • Bulgarian communist leader Georgi Dimitrov ordered, from Moscow in Russia, the creation of the People's Court to try Bulgarian leaders responsible for Bulgarian involvement in the European War on the side of the Germans. ww2dbase [Bulgaria Switched Sides | Moscow | CPC]
