ww2dbaseBetween 1938 and 1939, the Japanese Army tested the Experimental Type 97 47-millimeter anti-tank gun, and thought the results promising. After some enhancements to the design, the Type 1 47-millimeter anti-tank guns were placed into production at the Osaka Arsenal in Japan and the first gun entered service in 1942. This design was Japan's first completely indigenously developed anti-tank gun. They were light, had low profiles, and could fire either the Type 1 armor-piercing rounds or the Type 1 high explosive rounds. They were largely assigned to China and Burma, and they first saw combat in 1943; while effective against Chinese armored cars and light tanks, they were generally too weak to penetrate the armor of Allied medium tanks.Type 1 47-millimeter guns were also used as the main armament of the Type 97 Chi-Ha Shinhoto tanks.
About 2,300 examples were built during the design's production life.

Famous WW2 Quote
"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word. It is victory. Victory at all costs. Victory in spite of all terrors. Victory, however long and hard the road may be, for without victory there is no survival."Winston Churchill
