ww2dbaseCommissioned into service in Apr 1945, carrier HMS Glory departed for Australia shortly after with No. 837 Naval Air Squadron (flying Barracuda aircraft) and No. 1831 Naval Air Squadron (flying Corsair aircraft) on board to join British Pacific Fleet 11th Aircraft Carrier Squadron. Although she did not arrive in time to see combat, she had the honor of hosting the Rabaul, New Britain surrender ceremony on 6 Sep 1945. After assisting the return of the British administration in Hong Kong, she embarked British servicemen to return them to Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. She was placed in reserve in 1947. In Nov 1949, she was brought out of reserve as tension grew in Korea, and was recommissioned in Dec 1950. Her first tour of duty in the Korean War was between Apr and Sep 1951, the second between Jan and May 1952, and the third between Nov 1952 and May 1953. She was decommissioned for the second final time in 1956 and placed in reserve. In 1961, she was sold to a firm in Inverkeithing, Scotland, United Kingdom for scrap.

In June 1946 HMS Glory was in Adelaide where the ship was opened to the general public. My father William Allen was on board after the Japanese surrender and returned home on board in 1947. My father "Bill" who is 92 soon still remembers the kind Australian's who filmed a newsreel on board at the time.
I've tried to find this on the internet but failed.

My father flew from Glory in Korea.
Also from Implacable and Illustrious.
Aircraft flown include Corsairs,Seafurys, and Fireflies.
He is all there and going well

Served on the Glory during the tail end of WWII. Served on deck working with plane weaponry. Served on a couple other flat tops during my 5 years of service. Glad to still be here at 93 years of age. Any other old timers out there?

My dad served on HMS Glory during the Korean War. His name was Terry Baldwin who was from Birmingham. I have seen a reference asking of any knowledge of him. Unfortunately that site appears to be no longer operational. Unfortunately after an illustrious life, he lost the battle with cancer in December 2003.

Recently discovered photos suggest that my father, Harold Bennie, a RNZAF/RAF WW2 Coastal Command bomber pilot and flying officer was repatriated to New Zealand aboard HMS Glory. He may have disembarked in Sydney as this seems to be the closest Glory got to NZ. He rarely spoke of his war service, but of his return to NZ he said he for the rest of his life detested custard as it was so frequently served up at meals on his ship back. I would hugely appreciate anyone who knows anything about this voyage (dates, route, onboard/voyage annecdotes, info, etc.) contacting me or indicating sources of info. I am writing up as much about his WW2 service as I can find for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

My dad served on HMS glory, his name was Albert Richard Cleator, he was a PTI, and loved his naval life. But as so many hardly talked of it he lost his battle with leukaemia in 1992, aged 68. The disease was Inn relation to somewhere he visited during his navy years. Wonderful man.

My brother Robert Stobbart served on the Glory. He was in Australia an Korea presumably on board the Glory and later served on the Britania.
