My Grandfather Donald "Budd" Long was a radioman/gunner and Ray Crandall was his pilot. My Grandfather is the man standing in the middle looking to his right and you can see his white undershirt. We have other pictures of this when they were brought back to the USS Manila Bay and you can see a bandage on the top of my grandfather's head in the other pictures we have. They were shot down by friendly fire. If I remember correctly my grandfather said they had their landing gear down to go slower to take reconnaissance pictures and our men on the ground thought they were the Japanese because their planes did not have retractable landing gear. My grandfather always said Ray Crandall was the best pilot there ever was.
