  • Greek merchant steamer Athina Livanos sighted lifeboats occupied by the survivors of Norwegian steam tanker Arthur W. Sewall, which was sunk by German submarine U-109 three days prior. The survivors would be taken aboard and taken to Port of Spain, Trinidad. ww2dbase [HM]
  • German submarines U-660 and U-438 attacked Allied convoy SC-94 500 miles west of Ireland; at 1220 hours, U-438 damaged Greek merchant ship Condylis; at 1221 hours, U-660 sank Condylis, sank British merchant ship Empire Reindeer (all 65 aboard survived), British merchant ship Cape Race (all 63 aboard survived), and fatally damaged British merchant ship Oregon (2 were killed, 36 survived); at 1629 hours, U-438 sank the already-abandoned Oregon. ww2dbase [Second Happy Time | CPC]

  • An message was sent out to Morisini informing her that she was to make rendezvous with German ship Uckermark, escorted by torpedo boats T10, T13, and T14 in the Atlantic Ocean at 1000 hours. Australia Australian New Guinea
  • Japanese cruiser Kako was struck by three torpedoes from USS S-44 90 miles east of Kavieng, New Ireland at 0806 hours and sank at about 0815 hours; 34 were killed, 582 survived. ww2dbase [Kako | New Ireland | CPC]
  • USS S-44 spotted a group of four Japanese heavy cruisers at the distance of 800 meters off New Ireland at 0750 hours. At 0806 hours, she fired four torpedoes, scoring three hits on heavy cruiser Kako, sinking her. ww2dbase [S-44 | New Ireland | CPC]
France Gibraltar
  • The Pedestal convoy, 13 merchantmen and the tanker Ohio (escorted by fifty-nine warships), departed from Gibraltar for Malta. Lying in wait were twenty-one Axis submarines and some 800 aircraft. ww2dbase [Malta Campaign | AC]

India
  • Police in Bombay, India opened fire on a mob rioting following the arrest, on the previous day, of Mohandas Gandhi, Pandit Nehru and Dr. Maulana Azad, and all the members of the Indian Congress Party who attended the 5 August 1942 Bombay meeting. ww2dbase [Bombay | AC]
Japan
  • At Hashirajima island in Hiroshima Bay, Japan, Admiral Yamamoto convened a meeting aboard Yamato with Vice Admiral Nagumo of First Air Fleet, Vice Admiral Kondo of Second Fleet, and other top Combined Fleet staff officers. Russia

  • German troops reached the Krasnodar-Pyatigorsk-Maikop line in southern Russia.
