  • Alpo Marttinen stepped down as the commanding officer of 61st Regiment. ww2dbase [Alpo Marttinen | CPC]
Germany
  • 1st Lieutenant Elmer Taylor and 1st Lieutenant Willard Erfkamp of USAAF 364th Fighter Group, flying P-51 fighters, together shot down the German Me 163 rocket fighter piloted by Husser; Husser would survive the subsequent crash landing. ww2dbase [Me 163 Komet | CPC]
  • Major Richard Conner of USAAF 78th Fighter Group, flying a P-47 fighter, shot down a Me 262 jet aircraft over Osnabrück, Germany; the German pilot was observed to have bailed out before the jet crashed. ww2dbase [Osnabrück, Weser-Ems | CPC]
  • 1st Lieutenant Urban Drew, flying a P-51 fighter, shot down two Me 262 fighters (flown by Oberfeldwebel Heinz Arnold and Leutnant Gerhard Kobert) as they were taking off from Achmer Airfield. The only witness to the town victories, his wingman 2nd Lieutenant Robert McCandliss, was shot down by anti-aircraft fire and captured before the end of the mission, so Drew did not receive credit for these two downings until after the war when McCandliss was released from captivity. Italy Netherlands
  • German Air Force Oberfeldwebel Lothar Gall's Heinkel bomber collided with the mast giving out the beacon Sonne Elektra navigation aid to the German pilots; Dutch people in the area thought that the unexploded V-1 flying bomb attached to the bomber was a fuel tank and were killed as they broke in open and it exploded. ww2dbase [Vergeltungswaffe 1 | HM]

  • USS Baya sank a Japanese transport in the South China Sea, hitting her with 2 of 6 torpedoes fired. ww2dbase [Baya | South China Sea | CPC]

  • Kamoi departed Lapoc Bay, Philippine Islands at 0030 for Yulin Naval Base, Hainan, China. ww2dbase [Kamoi | Lapoc Bay | CPC]
Poland
  • Jewish prisoners of the Sonderkommando of Auschwitz II-Birkenau Concentration Camp organized a large revolt and escape. Crematorium IV was set on fire, while SS guards came under attack. During the havoc, some of the prisoners were successful in cutting through the perimeter fencing and got outside, but the SS guard responded and successfully rounded up all escapees and killed them all. After the revolt was put down in the camp, about 250 prisoners, including leader Zalmen Gradowski and Józef Deresinski, were dead. Three SS men were also killed; ten were wounded. Four Jewish women who had stolen the explosives from their workplace at the Union-Werke armaments factory, which were used during this revolt, were later hanged. ww2dbase [Auschwitz Concentration Camp | Discovery of Concentration Camps and the Holocaust | Oswiecim | CPC]
United Kingdom
  • More German Heinkel bombers carrying V-1 flying bombs were shot down. One V-1 flying bomb escaped the fighters and anti-aircraft guns and flew into a balloon cable over the village of Fawkham near Gravesend, Kent, England, United Kingdom and demolished several houses.
