As Allied troops surrounded Leipzig, Germany, this Volkssturm general committed suicide rather than face surrender, 19 Apr 1945B-17G Fortresses of the 546th Bomb Squadron drop their loads on the rail yards at Elsterwerda, Germany, Apr 19 1945. Note the smoke marker dropped by the lead aircraft signaling the remaining aircraft to drop their bombs.
