ww2dbaseIro Ilk was born in Nassau an der Lahn, Germany. A fighter pilot with the German Luftwaffe wing wing Lehrgeschwader 1 in 1939, he participated in the invasion of Poland and won the Iron Cross 2nd and 1st Class for achievements during that campaign. In 1940, he flew numerous missions over Britain. In 1942, he won the German Cross in Gold and the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross awards. He was later transferred to the wing Jagdgeschwader 300. On 25 Sep 1944, while flying a Bf 109 G-14 fighter, he was shot down and killed near Moers in western Germany by British Spitfire fighters. He flew over 300 missions during his career and was credited with shooting down 10 enemy aircraft during his career, 9 of which were with Jagdgeschwader 300.
