Finland to probe role of Waffen-SS volunteers

31 May 2018

In Jan 2018, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Jerusalem, Israel requested President Sauli Niinisto of Finland to investigate the role of the Finnish volunteer battalion of the Waffen-SS in WW2-era atrocities committed in Eastern Europe. Today, 31 May 2018, the Finnish government announced that the Finnish National Archives would be embarking on such a venture, with an anticipated completion date in Nov 2018.

I wouldn’t place too much credence on any report originating in the New York Times, particularly as this newspaper has a known reputation for publishing fake news.

Alan:
Just because the story is linked to a NY Times page does not make the story suspect, any more than the belief by some that information posted on Wikipedia is automatically false. In this case, the link is to a NY Times page but the article itself is by the Associated Press. Also, the same story was carried the same day by the Times of Israel, Fox News, the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Arizona Daily Star (Tucson), the Free Lance-Star (Fredericksburg, VA) and many others (all but the Times of Israel basically re-running the AP story). The story here is not about how the news item is linked but about Finland to Probe Role of SS Volunteers in WWII Atrocities.

The Finnish battalion of SS Viking planted the swastika on the highest mountain in Europe fighting along side the only ally left to them. Im certain they shot a good many Russians along the way. Finland saved all but about a dozen of the Finnish Jews from the holocaust. Finland had a military alliance with Germany against a common foe. Im sure a bunch of those poorly led minions of comrade Stalin were Jewish - wearing Russian uniforms. The Russians were stupid enough to attempt to "liberate" Finnish territory during the winter war. The Finns aren't particularly fond of the playground bully. Trust me, they piled up the frozen Russian bodies with volunteers from everywhere. Anyone who could fight. Took help from anybody. They had no choice. Fought bravely. Somebody might have got out of line. Jeez, that never happens in the Russian army. =====. You are correct about the NYT. Add CBS, CNN, MSNBC, NBC, ABC, the Wash Post. Im no fan of Limbaugh (Is he still on the air?). Not an ardent Trump supporter but becoming more so. Reference Maxine Waters.

And what exactly is the point at this late date? It becomes more and more like Israel has to keep bringing up the holocaust, and tying various parties to it as a way of saying "don't forget WE were the victims, and you OWE us!" As if there isn't anyone who couldn't be tied to the holocaust by some degree of implication. "Some of the people from your country helped the Nazis 80 years ago. Therefore we want you to apologize to us, while we take the moral high ground". Stupid. They could have done this decades ago. As if it matters now beyond reminding everyone to bend to Israel because "we were victims, yo!", and to make sure that no-one gets to warm an opinion of anyone who even indirectly helped the Nazis during WWII. Or even failed to directly step in to help the Jews. Everyone knows the were Finnish SS volunteers. It is almsot certain they did nasty things, as did SS volunteers (and others) from ALL nations. Why is an "investigation" into the EXACT nature or the sordid details necessary? It's bad enough they joined, we all know what that means. Now they demand a meaningless apology from an innocent government on behalf of people who are long dead, who may have done nasty things to other people who are long dead. Yet the Finns are expected tpo look contrite and publically apologize to Israel, who can then sit back smugly secure in their own well-played victimhood to deflect excessive objective public discussion over the present actualities of the situation. Israel are not just a bunch of Good Guys, Case Closed. There is more to the situation, and unpleasant and important as it is, the Holocaust doesn't excuse all present actions and cause a nation to be blameless and innocent in all things.

None of the horrific abuses committed EVERYWHERE should never be forgotten with the hope they will not be repeated.
Neither should these atrocities be used again and again for political leverage. As someone else said earlier, the participants are dead and their grandchildren should learn how wrong it all went for everyone but not make it a hate issue.
