The man facing the camera is a warrant officer and Abnaki’s Boatswain Schroeder. Behind him are probably Abnaki commanding officer Lieutenant Dewey Walley and Commander Jesse C Johnson.

The speck off U-505’s bow is a motor whaleboat, presumably to carry Abnaki’s tow cable to the submarine.

What is interesting (at least to me) was that from the moment Abnaki arrived to join the Guadalcanal task group, her log listed the captured vessel as “USS Nemo” complete with quotation marks. U-505 was called by the codename “USS Nemo” in all US Navy documents until the end of the war to preserve the secret of her capture.
