Both pilots were with US Navy Cruiser Scouting Squadron VCS-7 who switched from their usual SOC floatplanes to British Spitfire fighters for their Naval gunfire-spotting missions during the Normandy operation. In this case, Lt Doyle is dismounting a somewhat rare Spitfire Mark Vc with RAF side letters 4Z.
