Famous WW2 Quote
"The raising of that flag on Suribachi means a Marine Corps for the next 500 years."James Forrestal, Secretary of the Navy, 23 Feb 1945

The official USMC caption for this photo says this took place on Aug 10, 1945 prior to take-off for that day’s bombing mission but this is incorrect. The actual mission logs for both the bomber squadron (VMB-611) and the fighter squadron (VMF-115) say the raid occurred on Aug 9, 1945 and do not list Maj Groff as participating. The VMB-611 mission report for Aug 7, 1945 lists Maj Groff ferrying POW Wada from Libby to Moret.
