I believe the location of the photo is incorrect. I think we're looking at the south end of Mare Island. The city of Vallejo is in the background behind the stern of Wahoo. The white structure on the bluff on the left hand side of the photo is Admiral Farragut's former residence on the island.

Lee:
The Navy’s caption for this photo has always said it was off Mare Island but there was a time I thought differently and persuaded the editor to list a different location. Your comment caused me to revisit the question, call in some additional resources, and I am now convinced you are absolutely correct and the Navy had it right all along. The caption has been changed back accordingly. Thank you for bringing this subject up.

NOTE: Some sources list the USS Shasta (background) as “loading ammunition at the Naval Ammunition Depot Mare Island” but the Shasta’s own War History says she was there for some minor fitting out after being drydocked.

Just a little insight on the USS Shasta. Mare Island did have ammunition bunkers and in the picture it appears that the Shasta is loading cargo of some type and there are railroad boxcars on the pier. It could be that the Shasta was loading (or possibly off-loading) ammunition. That evolution may have be in conjunction with her dry docking. I was serving on the USS Proteus at Mare Island in the early 1970's when I worked on a line handling party for an ammunition ship mooring at the south end of the island. I'm not being critical of your website. I just want to share my memories of my time at Mare Island and onboard the Proteus.
