The black and white stripes on this Typhoon were for aircraft type recognition purposes and not for Normandy operations. It can be seen that these markings consist of 4 narrow black and 3 wide white stripes, indigenous to Typhoons, and the later Tempest, whereas D -Day stripes consisted of 3 white and 2 black stripes all of equal widths. The D - Day markings superceded the identification markings when the aircraft was used for the Normandy operations.
