About 10 years ago ,the wife and l did another war tour.we stayed in a Gite in a farmyard in the village of Ryes,Normady. As we walked along the farm buildings l said to my wife look at those machine gun bullit holes in the wall. pulling some bushes away from the wall there was writing... Corp Smithers .Paignton The HD symbol..and lots of other soldiers names. I started to take pictures (still got them) my wife was doing rubbings of them, when the farmers wife came along. What are you doing she asked?I told her the holes in the wall were from a fight on D Day,and here is the soldiers names who stayed here.Oh she said ,we thought children had done it!!.On another note we tried to find where Witmanns tank brewed up.I knew roughly where ,but the N158 is now a Auto route so cant stop. Went to the local village bar and asked the locals for imfo . Well about ten of them got hold of my map and for the next few minutes run about outside. Turns out the old N158 runs along the new road and its easy to get to the spot. on the corner of a field, Nothing will grow there because of the oils etc from the tank.
