- The US Liberty ship Starr King was torpedoed by the Japanese submarine I-21, 150 miles east of Sydney, Australia. By the time that the Australian destroyer HMAS Warramunga arrived in the early afternoon, Starr King was awash from her bridge aft and her crew had abandoned ship, but they re-boarded when Warramunga tried to take the 7,176-ton vessel in tow. ww2dbase [AC]
