MY NAME IS ROBERT LUMP, SOM2/. AT TIME OF MY DISCHARGE, IN 1946. I WAS SUPPOSED TO TRANSFER FROM MY SHIP, USS BOXWOOD AN8, NET TENDER, TO THE USS LUCE DD522 ON THE DAY THAT IT SAILED OUT OF ATTU, ALASKA. BUT THE LUCE SAILED OUT OF MASSACRE BVAY THE NIGHT BEFORE. I WAS TO TRANSFER TO REPLACE A SONARMAN ABOARD THE LUCE.I FAILED TO MAKE A RECORD OF THE NAME OF THE SOM2/C THAT I WOULD BE SWITCHING DUTY WITH SHIPS WITH . I LOOKED UP THE MUSTER ROLL ON MY COMPUTOR AND IT SEEMS AS THOUGH ALL THE SONARMEN ON BOARD THE LUCE SURVIVED THE KAMIKAZI SINKING. IS THERE ANYWAY THAT I COULD GET THE ADDRESSESOF THE SUVIVING SONARMEN, TO TRY AND CONTACT THE ONE THAT COULD HAVE BEEN THE ONE THAT I WOULD HAVE REPLACED ?
MY PRESENT ADDESS IS :34252 N. BIRCH LN.
GURNEE, ILL.60031

It’s pretty disheartening that you have my grandpa’s name is Floyd when it’s Lloyd E Mergel You would think if a man gives his life, y’all would know his/her name !!

I understand your frustration and your feelings. With my last name, I have spent a lifetime being sensitive to people getting it right. But getting Floyd or Lloyd right should be easier, however. This page with the final Luce Muster List is a transcription of Navy documents and is not original work by anyone at the World War II Database. I have checked back with the Luce Muster Rolls and found that Lloyd E. Mergel had his name listed correctly in every set of Muster Rolls except the last one that accounted for the men lost in the sinking. His name is transcribed from the original Navy document correctly here – it is the Navy that got it wrong. See https://ww2db.com/image.php?image_id=22140, top line.
