ww2dbaseIn Aug 1921, the Turkestan Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic was established within the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. In May 1925, it was raised to the level of a republic of the Soviet Union as the Turkmen Soviet Socialist Republic. Commonly known as Turkmenia in the USSR, the historically nomadic populations of this region of Central Asia were forced to become sedentary; together with the influx of ethnic Russians and the Soviet attack on religion, the culture and society of the region changed significantly in the 1920s and 1930s. Turkmenia remained in Soviet control after the war until Oct 1991 when the independent nation of Republic of Turkmenistan was established.
